Our story

Nikka Zubon was founded in 2015 by Brathish Thevarasan, a French native with a curious and open spirit.

During his student years, Brathish traveled to Japan several times. Through everyday interactions with Japanese people, he discovered a culture shaped by thoughtfulness, craftsmanship, and quiet strength. Among many impressions, Japanese workwear left a particularly deep mark.

Voyage au Japon

He became fascinated by the trousers worn by construction workers — Tobi and Nikka pants. Designed for craftsmen working at heights, these garments are defined by wide silhouettes at the thighs, tapered ankles, and generous length, allowing ease of movement from crouching to standing. Every detail exists for a reason.

Over time, Tobi and Nikka trousers evolved through constant refinement, shaped by the real needs of their wearers. Their distinctive form is often said to echo elements of traditional hakama combined with Western tailoring — resulting in a silhouette that has come to symbolize the spirit of modern workers.

Nikka Zubon began with a simple desire:

to share these authentic Japanese workwear garments with people beyond Japan.

Our symbol is the black kite — Tobi or Tonbi in Japanese — a bird associated with travel, freedom, and the meeting of different worlds. It reflects our own journey, connecting cultures through clothing.

Today, Nikka Zubon works closely with trusted partners and manufacturers in Japan, including Hiroshima Prefecture, a region known for its quality textiles and careful craftsmanship. Each item is carefully selected, not redesigned, with respect for its original purpose and character.

The shop is now run by Brathish Thevarasan and Mami Kajiwara. Based in Japan, we operate exclusively online, allowing us to deliver Japanese workwear directly to customers around the world. We take great care in every shipment and every interaction.

Our goal is not simply to export clothing, but to propose a way of wearing Japanese workwear in everyday life — naturally, comfortably, and with creativity.

We hope that adding these garments to your wardrobe brings not only comfort, but a quiet connection to the culture and people behind them.
